
Great-Grandfather Hans Nielsen was born in Denmark, September 24, 1819 and died September 21, 1875. His wife Karen (Carrie) Haakons was born June 28, 1833 and died September 20, 1910. They came to America and settled on a farm in Riceland Township, Freeborn County where he built a log cabin. They farmed there until their death and are buried in the Seven Day Adventist Cemetery in Riceland. They had five children: George C., James, Margaret, Daisy and Emma. George C. was born in Denmark and was two years old when he came to America with his parents. He was born April l0, 1862 and died December 16, 1932. He married Mary Haakens, who was born in Norway January 16, 1833 and died November 1, 1929. Mary had 4 children, Brita, Berta, Susan and Louise which were adapted by Goerge C Nelson. They bought a farm in Moscow Township in 1884 where they farmed until their death. They are buried in Moscow Lutheran Church Cemetery. George worked hard grubbing trees and stumps, clearing the ground to plant more seed to get more food for his animals. He also made axe handles out of seasoned hickory wood to sell. There are still many hickory and black walnut trees on the farm. They had four children: Caroline, Henry, Clara and George M. Henry married Alma Stoa daughter of Martin Stoa, Moscow. Clara married Iver Smeby, brother of Alfred Smeby. George M. married Mayme Lowry, Moscow. Caroline married Alfred Smeby, of Moscow. They bought the farm across from the Moscow Lutheran Church, where they farmed until their death. They are all buried in the Moscow Lutheran Church Cemetery, except Alma Nelson who is in a nursing home. Merrill, son of Alfred and Caroline bought the Nelson farm in 1937 where he and his wife Evelyn (Hanson) farmed for 5O years. It became a century farm in 1984. They sold it in 1987 and moved to Albert Lea.

GEORGE CHRISTIAN NELSON was born in Denmark and was two years old when he came to America with his parents. Became U.S. citizen, May 25, 1897. He was born April l0, 1862 and died December 16, 1932. He married Mary Haakens , who was born in Norway, January 16, 1833 and died November 1, 1929. She had 4 children, which George C adapted. George C. and Mary had 4 additional children together. They bought a farm in Moscow Township in 1884 where they farmed until their death. They are buried in Moscow Lutheran Church Cemetery.
